Down But Not Out

The Flin Flon Bombers were able to come back from a 2 goal deficit not once but twice this past weekend, for back to back wins over the Bruins and Broncos.

Estevan jumped out quickly 2-0 in the first period, before the Bombers erupted for 3 in the second period on goals from: Allison(1), Etter(1) and Evans(2).

The Bruins also got one more in the second from Robertson who potted a power play marker at 12:48, to tie the game 3-3 after 2.

All Flin Flon in the third who outshot Estevan 16-9 and 49-28 over the three periods, and got the game winning goal from Chris Rauckman who scored his league leading 6th of the season.

Insurance goals came from: Austin Calladine(2) and Evans Campbell(1) into the empty net as the Bombers picked up their second win of the season.

The next night against Humboldt,  Flin Flon started slow registering only 4 shots in the first period, and found themselves down 1-0 on a goal by Bronco captain Justin Lund.

Lund would score early in the second on the powerplay to put the Broncos up 2-0. Flin Flon put their powerplay to work on goals from: Calladine(3) and Rauckman(7) to tie the game at 2.

Humboldt would take the lead again 3-2 when Shatz fed a perfect pass to Swystun on a 2 on 0 to beat Hofley low blocker side.

Turning point of the game for me was Tyson Empey getting a Bronco turn over behind Humboldt's net and feeding a pass in front to Dean Allison who buried his second of the season with only 34 seconds remaining in the second period.

That goal gave the Bombers the momentum and the fourth line delivered the game winning goal on a nice deflection by Michael Knaub. The former Melville Millionaire scored his first in a Bomber uniform when he re-directed a Perrilat shot from the blue line between the legs of Bronco goalie Brandon Holtby.

Flin Flon improves to: 3-1-0-1, 7 points and second in the Sherwood Division, 1 point behind Melfort. The Bombers are a perfect 3-0 at home.

Humboldt looked a lot better than I expected, and are the quickest team I have seen in the league so far this year. It looks like there are a lot of good prospects and I believe the Broncos are going to give a lot of teams trouble this year.

Ryan Smith may be a new coach in the league, but has plenty of experience and has 4 pretty balanced lines that are very good on the transition. The Broncos also have a very aggressive forecheck and got in the face of the Bombers all night.

They will be a lot more competitive than people think.

Offense does not look like it is going to be a problem for Flin Flon who have scored 20 goals in 5 games to lead the league. The Bombers have given up 17 though, with 9 coming on the penalty kill.

Mike Reagan is not concerned, as he really likes his backend and feels they will tighten things up , once they get a few more games under their belt.

Chris Rauckman leads the league in goals(7) and points(11). Parker Evans Campbell sits third with 8 points and Austin Calladine who has only played 3 games, sits tenth with 5 points. Danys Chartrand has 4 points and is second in points amongst SJHL defensemen, 1 point behind Spencer Trapp of Notre Dame.

The SJHL prepares for the Showcase and will not renew league games until Thursday October the 2nd. Flin Flon will continue their 5 game homestand this Friday and Saturday against Notre Dame and Laronge. 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com will broadcast Saturday's game.
