Flin Flon Bombers Open Main Camp On Friday

It is a big season for the Flin Flon Bombers for lots of reasons as not only are they the reigning league champions heading into this year, but the franchise is also  celebrating 100 years.

Not only are the Bombers regarded as one of the most decorated Junior Franchises in the world, but you could argue one of the most famous and celebrated Hockey Clubs on the planet.

This promises to be a historic season with lots of events and celebrations including the SJHL Hall Of Fame Weekend on September the 25th and 26th.

Main Camp will open up on Friday at the Whitney Forum,  and one of the most familiar faces of the franchise in recent memory will not be present.

Long time Head Coach and GM , Mike Reagan who has been the Coach and GM of the team the last 19 seasons and the face of the franchise has taken a job with the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL.

Reagan leaves the team on top after he was able to lead the Bombers to their first league title in 33 years.

The Bombers have welcomed Cole McCaig back to the team as he returns after a one year absence with the Brooks Bandits of the BCHL. Prior to last season, McCaig was an Assistant Coach with the Bombers for 7 years, so he knows the organization and community very well.

McCaig also suited up for the Bombers as a player for 123 games between 2011 and 2014 before finishing his career with Way Way of the MJHL.

Friday, Cole McCaig will officially begin his first tour of duty as the new bench boss and looks forward to his new role. “ I mean obviously as a staff we are really excited, Jon Klasson and the rest of our scouting staff have identified  some really good players. We have 3 full teams signed up for Camp, so we have more than enough players here who are going to be fighting for spots to be a Bomber.

Flin Flon is expecting 60 players at Camp including 14 returning players from last year’s Championship team including 9 forwards and 5 defensemen and no returning goalies with Finn Werner trying out with Everett of the WHL.

That number of returning players will dwindle to 11 as the Bombers need to complete the deal with the Humboldt Broncos and owe them 3 players after the big trade from this past January’s trade deadline.

That deal will be completed after October the 1st.

Main Camp opens on Friday with registration at 11am. Team  practises start at noon and will continue til 5:30pm. Intra Squad Games will then take over for the rest of the day til 9:30pm.

Intra Squad Games will start again on Saturday at 10am with the final two games slated to go Saturday night at 6 and 7:30pm.

The Bombers won’t have much time to rest after Camp as they will jump right into the Pre-Season as they will host the Northern Manitoba Blizzard of the MJHL this Sunday August the 6th, 4pm at the Whitney Forum.

Then it will be another 4 pre season games in 5 days including a trip to Laronge on Monday the 7th, Flin Flon host the Wolves on Tuesday  the 8th and a home and home with the Blizzard on the 10th and 11th.

The regular season will begin officially on Friday September the 18th with the Bombers travelling to Laronge before hosting the Wolves in their home opener the following Friday on the 25th.

The Home Opener will include the raising of the Championship  banners prior to puck drop, so hopefully there will be a nice big crowd to officially  kick off the 100th season.
