Come Back Comes A Little Short

It was one of the best games I have seen Flin Flon  play at the Northern Lights Palace, but the Bombers still found themselves on the wrong end of a 5 to 4 score.

It was all about the timely goals for the Melfort Mustangs who scored just 33 seconds into last night's contest.

Chase Huxley converted a beautiful pass from Mustang captain Ben Tkachuk to get the ball rolling.

Tkachuk was the best player on the ice and ended last night's game with 4 points including a pair of goals.

Tkachuk scored another timely goal 11 seconds into the second period and ended up scoring the game winner on a nice wrap around ealy in the third.

The Bombers battled back all night and did manage to tie the game on a couple of occasions and certainly didn't lack effort.

Cole Duperreault continues to be the Bombers biggest weapon and he scored two of their goals for his 28th and 29th of the season.

One with the extra attacker and one at even strength.

The other Flin Flon goals came courtesy of Jeremi Tremblay ( 23) and Alexi Sylvestre ( 13).

The Bombers got 3 of their 4 goals on the PP, and finished the game 3 for 7 while they killed all 6 Mustang powerplays.

No question, the Flin Flon powerplay continues to be their bread and butter and if they can find a way to start scoring more 5 on 5 they might be able to pull out these tight games.

It was a tough night for Bomber starter Harmon Laser Hume who got yanked after giving up 4 goals on 8 shots. Mike Reagan indicated on the CFAR Post Game Show,  that he felt Harmon had no chance on most of the goals and made the move to spark his team.

Kenny Marquart came in relief early in the second and didn't see a shot til almost at the end of the period.

The Bombers had lots of jump and were the better team for much of the game but did not get rewarded for their efforts.

Final shots were 37 to 21 in the Bombers favour.

It is a big two points for the Mustangs who are now just 2 points behind the Bombers for second in the Sherwood and fourth overall.

It was a tough loss for the Bombers who not only lost ground to Melfort but couldn't take advantage of the Ice Wolves loss to Battleford. Flin Flon remains 3 points behind Laronge with 5 games in hand.

A big weekend is coming up with the defending champion Estevan Bruins coming to town for a pair of games this weekend.

Games will be Friday and Saturday at the Whitney Forum starting at 7:30. This will be the Bruins first visit since this past spring's Canalta Cup final.

102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com will broadcast Saturday's game.
