First Win at the Centennial Cup

The Flin Flon Bombers picked up their first win at the Centennial Cup this afternoon in Summerside PEI as they were able to hold on for a 6 to 4 win over the Sudbury Cubs of the NOJHL.

After spotting the Cubs the first goal, Flin Flon reeled off four straight to take a 4 to 1 lead after one.

Leo Seitz, Connor Miller and Rhett Ewen picked up a pair of goals to lead the way offensively. The Bombers did a fantastic job as they were able to get to the net and create a lot of havoc in front of Cub netminder Iain Wintle.

Ewen's second goal late in the period chased Wintle from the game in favour of Matthew Vahramian.

The goaltending change sparked the Cubs who scored three goals in a 7 minute span to tie the game at 4.

Flin Flon looked a little rattled but got a big break when Reid Arberry picked up a loose puck on his side of centre with only 5 seconds left in the middle frame. Arberry raced down the ice and fired a shot over Vahramian's right shoulder with .5  seconds left on the clock.

That put the Bombers back out in front 5 to 4 heading out for the final period.

Flin Flon came out and controlled much of the final period and were able to fend the Cubs off the rest of the way as Landon Alexander put the game away with an empty netter with just under 20 seconds left in the game.

Charlie Tritt the Bomber netminder picked up the win making 20 saves on 24 shots and played well in the third and helped preserve the win.

The Bombers pick up a very important win to improve to 1-2 in the tournament and will still have a chance to get to the playoff round. Sudbury will fall to 1-2 as both teams have one round robin game remaining.

Flin Flon plays their final round robin game on Wednesday night against the Truro Bearcats, the Maritime Junior Hockey League Champions at 5:30pm Manitoba time. Truro sits with a record of 1-1.

You will be able to once again catch all the action from Credit Union Place with the pre game at 5:15pm and play by play at 5:30 on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com.
