City Council held a brief meeting in council chambers last night and announced a zoning bylaw amendment.

 

The city made an amendment for a emergency residential centre downtown  for the purpose of having temporary lodging for people who are homeless or in need of immediate housing with on site supervision when the shelter is occupied.

 

The city also had a second reading about a development plan amendment for commercial land in downtown Flin Flon which would be the old staffhouse area.

 

Mayor Fontaine and Councillor Slipp attended a city’s caucus meeting in Brandon and were taken for a tour of the Brandon area downtown and got to see first hand how that city is dealing with homelessness and get some information on the social services that are dealing with the problem.

 

They will pass on the information they obtained to the safety committee.

 

Mayor Fontaine also commented on the the recent amalgamation of the RCMP in Flin Flon,  Snow Lake and Cranberry and said he was not in favour of this situation running long term and hoping this is only a temporary measure. Councillor Eagle went on to comment that she would like to see some funding from the Provincial and Federal Government to hire some Community Safety Officers to take some of the load off the RCMP.
