Wab Kinew, the leader of the Manitoba NDP, spoke with Arctic Radio News about how his party would focus on job creation with the Mining Community Reserve Fund. He says we need exploration to continue to identify the next generation of mineral reserves. He noted the other thing is the NDP has a strong record of working with both workers and mining companies to be sure that deals get done in order to ensure that jobs stay in the north and he thinks there’s probably opportunities to create jobs in other sectors that are either some of the support industries for mining but also some new areas like cold weather testing.
His remarks follow statements from both parties that were released yesterday, criticising each other over their commitment to northern mining communities.
