When Manitoba NDP leader Wab Kinew was in Flin Flon Friday I asked him about changes to the electoral map. The Electoral Division Boundaries Commission has proposed combining Flin Flon and The Pas ridings, both NDP seats, into one. Kinew says the north deserves proper representation and if one MLA has to serve a huge geographic region in the north is every community in that region going to get the proper representation at the Legislature? He adds on the party side if they have their MLA in The Pas and an MLA in Flin Flon one of them is going to lose out on this so it’s obviously a situation he doesn’t want to see because they’ve got two great MLAs and they’d like to have them continue to represent their communities and then also there’s differences regionally in the north so why not respect the diversity in different communities.
Kinew says the commission has until the end of the year to present their report but he understands they’re almost finished their work and will release their report in the near future.
