Comeback Kids Do It Again

I don't know if you could compare it to the US Miracle On Ice from 1980, but Flin Flon are a team that is displaying a lot of the same characteristics.

The Bombers have been able to come back from a two goal deficit in both games and have tied the best of 5 Wildcard series at a game a piece with the Estevan Bruins.

Flin Flon could easily be up two games to none, but are quite happy with a split in Estevan as they prepare for game three at the Whitney Forum tonight.

The Bruins seemed poised to jump up two games to none, when they took the lead 3-1 early in the third period on Saturday. For the second straight night, the Bombers did not panic and were able to convert on their chances.

Dean Allison scored goals at the 8:48 mark and at 12:38 to tie it. Bruin goaltender Matt Gibney who has been outstanding had a bit of a meltdown after the third goal, feeling that he was being interfered with in front of his own net.

The Bombers have certainly been aggresive and have been making it a point to get to the net in the first two games of this series.

For the second straight night these two teams met in overtime, and Flin Flon once again looked like they had the momentum. Estevan took the first game in double ot, and could really push the Bombers backs against the wall with a win on Saturday.

I said to Josh Lewis who was doing colour for me on the CFAR broadcast, that I did not see the game going to a second overtime this time. Both teams were not as sharp in their own ends and I thought it may end quickly.

Fortunately for Flin Flon it did, when Tyson Empey took a pass from Dean Allison behind the Bruin net and fired a puck in the open goal, with goaltender Matt Gibney on the other side of the net.

An epic celebration as the entire Bomber team skated across the ice to congratulate victorious goal tender Simon Hofley who stopped 42 out of 45 shots for his first SJHL playoff victory.

Flin Flon continues to keep the no.1 line form the Bruins off the score sheet. Daae, Froese and Koslowski do not have any points in this series and the Bombers are checking them well.

Neither team has been able to score a powerplay goal and are a combined 0 for 13 in the two games. The Bruins have looked good short handed though, and have come close to scoring a few short handed goals in the first two games.

Tyson Empey and Dean Allison have been the two unsung heroes for the Bombers in the first two games and lead the team with a combined 9 points. Empey leads all players in this series with 3 goals in the two games.

The Whiney Forum will be the sight for games three and four and should be a mad house. There is no place like Flin Flon to watch a JR. A game and you can double the excitement at playoff time.

This has been a fantastic journey for this great young group, and you can continue to be part of it as the next chapter unfolds tonight at the Whitney Forum on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com.

It all starts at 7:10 tonight with the Murray GM Coach's Show.
