Bombers Grab 3 Out Of 4 Points

The SJHL opening weekend has come and gone and the Flin Flon Bombers were able to take 3 out of 4 points against a pair of Sherwood Division rivals.

On Friday the Bombers were able to beat a hot goalie Damon Cunningham with three goals in a 56 second span in the second period picking up the 5 to 3 win against the Nipawin Hawks.

The Bombers handilly out shot Nipawin 49 to 20 and without Cunningham the score should of been a lot worse.

It was quite the weekend for Northville Minnesota's Trevor Stenglein who potted three goals in the first two game including a pair in the win over Nipawin on Friday.

Joey Lies, Matt Egan and Aiden Chow who picked up his first ever SJHL goal scored the other goals. Chow's goal stood as the game winner, not bad for his  first junior goal.

Saturday, the Bombers hosted the Melfort Mustangs.

Melfort came in a played a typical Trevor Blevins game limiting the Bomber offensive chances and did a really good job keeping most of their shots to the outside.

Trevor Stenglein was able to score the Maroon and White's only goal. On a rare Mustang mistake, Stenglein got behind the defense and went in alone to beat James Venne with a shot low glove hand and gave Flin Flon the 1 to 0 lead mid way through the second.

Melfort answered just 25 seconds into the third when Ryan Duguay beat Harmon Laser Hume with a quick wrist shot.

That score would hold up the rest of the way through regulation and we would need overtime.

The Bombers won the opening face off and got the puck in the Mustang zone but turned the puck over which resulted in a 2 on 1 the other way.

The very talented Zac Somers flipped  a perfect pass to Aidyn Hutchinson who beat Laser Hume five hole just 15 seconds into ot.

This quieted a very large Whitney Forum crowd as the Mustangs will start the season at 2-0.

The Bombers despite not playing one of their better  games will take the point and start the year 1-0-1.

Some early concerns may be the powerplay going 0 for 13 in the first two games and the top line of Vockler, Sylvestre and Justin Lies who  haven't picked up a single point.

The good news is it early and Head Coach and GM, Mike Reagan feels it is just a matter of time before they start to gel.

Next up will be a home and home against another Sherwood rival in the Laronge Ice Wolves. Laronge comes to town on Friday and the Bombers will return the favour on Saturday.

We will broadcast Saturday's game on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com beginning with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 8:15 MB time.
