Hawks Win Thriller

The Nipawin Hawks continue to make history every time they step on the ice as their regulation unbeaten streak has now reached 29 games after a 2-1 win  last night against the Flin Flon Bombers.

Before fans got a chance to sit down with their popcorn and coffee, the Hawks scored early when Grant Baetsen re-directed a puck past Brenden Newton just 1:41 into the game for the only goal of the first period.

Nipawin scored early in the second which did stand up as the eventual game winner when Harasymuk jumped on a loose puck in the slot.

The Bombers would answer with a powerplay goal later in the frame when Daylan Marchi converted a cross ice pass from Moretz to cut the lead to 2-1.

That goal sparked the Bombers who would take it to the Hawks the rest of the way but they could not put any more pucks past Declan Hobbs.

Hobbs shut the door the rest of the way and saved his best for a 4 minute Bomber powerplay. Ante Mustapic took a double minor for high sticking and Flin Flon got several good chances.

Hobbs made point blank saves off Hooper, Daniels and Heine on the four man advantage.

I thought this game was there for the taking and was impressed with how the Bombers were able to come out and battle one of the best teams in the country. Hobbs was definately the difference and the first star of the game.

Final shots were 31-28 in favour of Nipawin, with 15 coming in the first period. Flin Flon managed to go 1 for 5 against the league's best PK, while the Hawks were 0 for 3.

The Bomber record will fall to 18-21-3-4, 1 point behind Kindersley for 8th. The Klippers play Laronge tonight and will have two games in hand.

Next up will be another power house team from the Sherwood, the Melfort Mustangs who are no slouches at 31-10-4-1 and have beaten the Bombers 3 out of 4 this season.

It will be a home and home with the first game at the Palace on Friday and the re-match in Flin Flon Saturday. 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com will have both broadcasts with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 7:10 both nights.
