Game 5 Here We Come

The Flin Flon Bombers not only staved off elimination, but they also took it to the Bruins 4-1 Tuesday night at the Whitney Forum, to even the best of five SJHL Wildcard Series at 2-2 with Estevan. Mike Reagan was adament on the CFAR Post Game show Monday that his team had to play with the lead. They trailed in all three previous games of this series.

The Bombers made sure of that and came out and scored the first two goals of the game in the first period. Dean Allison scored his third of the series when he deflected AJ Kapcheck's wrist shot from the blue line to open the scoring at the 12:35 mark of the first period.

Austin Evans and Eric Pedersen went to work on the penalty kill, when Pedersen made a perfect pass from behind the Bruin net to set up Evans who was alone in front of Matt Gibney. This was Evans first goal of the series and stood up as the game winner.

Estevan was at their blue line, looking to go on a rush the other way and neglected their own zone.

Estevan would score early in the second period when Ben Johnstone took a nice pass from Lynden Pastachak and roofed it over the right shoulder of Simon Hofley, who had his easiest night of the series. The Bombers outshot the Bruins for the fourth straight game 45-28 and 15-9 in the third period.

Flin Flon got insurance goals from Eric Pedersen, his series leading fourth goal just 44 seconds into the third period and Brody Robinson found the empty net for his first playoff goal with only 50 seconds remaining.

The other three games were pretty tight, but there was no contest Tuesday night, Flin Flon was a lot better. I thought Estevan looked beat up and tired and this fired up young Bomber squad will take the momentum into Estevan for game 5 tomorrow.

Estevan threw the body pretty effectively on Monday, but it was the Bombers who were pounding the Bruins on Tuesday. Brody Robinson in particular throwing a number of big hits. One that jumps out at me, was his big hit on Bruin d-man Nolan Nicholas in the second period.

Brock Hounsell was very physical too along with Evan Akkerman and Paul Soubry. Flin Flon appeared to want this one more and once again when they needed a big win they came through. This is something that we have seen quite regularly since the beginning of February.

The Bombers look like they have solved Matt Gibney and have given themselves a chance to win the series Thursday night. Mike Reagan continues to be impressed by this group's will to win and their never say die attitude. I think all the pressure is on the Bruins and were expected to win. Don't tell that to young Bombers, who don't appear to be phased by much.

No matter what go's down this will be a lot of fun to see how it all play's out tomorrow night. It will also be a shame to see this series come to an end as this has been a tremendous matchup with two teams who have not met in the post season since Flin Flon came back to the SJHL in 1983.

Don't forget to listen to all the action tomorrow on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com starting with the pre-game show at 8:15 Manitoba time. If the Bombers win they will play Yorkton and if the Bruins win they will face Battleford. Both series will start Saturday.
