Bombers Unlucky In Game One

The Flin Flon Bombers may have dropped the first game of the Survivor Series to the Estevan Bruins, but they sent a huge statement to the Bruins in a losing cause. The Bombers are for real and are not about to let their season end. A lot of people around the league thought this might be a mis-match but the Bombers were the better team last night and deserved a better fate.

Estevan scored the first 2 goals of the game when Michael Sagen scored a nice goal over the shoulder of Simon Hofley to put the Bruins up 2-0 at the 11:28 mark of the second period. The Bombers were pressing and finally got rewarded for their efforts, when Tyson Empey was able to bury a nice pass from Austin Evans 29 seconds after the Sagen goal.

Flin Flon was in good shape cutting the deficit to 2-1 after 2. That score would hold up till the 18:56 mark of the third period, when Eric Pedersen was able to get loose behind the Bruin defense and score a nice wrist shot low glove side on Matt Gibney, sending the game to overtime.

The first over time settled nothing, with the Bombers out chancing the Bruins 2 to 1, but could not get a puck past Gibney. Estevan was able to put the game away, when former Ice Wolf Jason Durert got loose in the slot and converted a Keegin Allison pass from behind the Flin Flon net for the game winner at 4:02 of the second over time.

The Bombers outshot the Bruins 52-35 including 17-9 in both overtimes. Matt Gibney the Bruin goaltender, was the best player on the ice and awarded the game's first star. I was just saying this yesterday that I thought Gibney was the most under rated goalie in the league and he proved his worth last night.

The game never would of even gotten to over time without his terrific performance. This might of been one of the best playoff efforts I have seen from a Bomber team in the last ten seasons. It is very unfortunate that Flin Flon did not come away with the victory.

Mike Reagan said on the CFAR Post Game Show last night, that no-one was hanging their head in the Bomber locker room, and that their goal was to split the first two games in Estevan, and still have that oppurtunity tonight.

This was a complete team effort with every single player in the lineup giving it their all, with all four lines rolling and a great effort from the entire blue line. I don't know if the Bombers can actually play any better than what they displayed last night.

This is an amazing group, who's season appeared to be over the last time they were in Estevan, February the 1st dropping a 7-1 decision. The Bombers caught fire winning six out of their last nine games to get into the post season, to the surprise of many that counted this group out. Every time the Bombers have had to win a big game over that stretch, they have been able to deliver and will need to do that again tonight.

A couple other things that stand out from last night. Flin Flon was able to keep the mighty Estevan powerplay in check, killing all four Estevan man advantages. The Bruins had the second best powerplay in the regular season. The Bombers also did a very good job containg the number one line of SJ scoring champion Daae, Froese and Koslowski. Flin Flon will need to do that again if they want to win game number two tonight, and go back to Flin Flon with a split.

Game time is 7:30 at Affinity place with the game broadcast on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com with the Murray GM Coach's Show at 7:15. The series shifts back to Flin Flon for games three and four, Monday and Tuesday.
