Tough End To The Road Trip

It was not the way the Flin Flon Bombers wanted to end their four game in five night road trip.

The Estevan Bruins took it to the Bombers 7-1 Saturday night.

I agreed with Mike Reagan on the CFAR Post Game Show, it was not a 7-1 game.

The Bombers came out and played a good first period and trailed 1-0 after one, despite out skating the Bruins in the first. Unfortunately the tail of the Bomber season continued as they could not muster up any offense.

Flin Flon fired 22 shots at Matt Gibney, but could only muster one goal in the third, when Peter Poulin Roy took a nice pass from Eric Pederson, and fired a wrist shot in the top right corner for his second of the season.

The game was already decided at that point as Estevan built up a 5-1 lead, and scored two more for good measure later in the third to take the game 7-1.

Once again I was impressed how the Bombers never gave up and kept skating right till the end. Sooner or later you would have to think Flin Flon will get a break as long as they continue to work hard.

The trip was not a total disapointment, as Flin Flon did come away with a victory snapping a seven game losing streak with a 4-3 shoot out win over Notre Dame on Wednesday. Austin Evans scored his first two goals as a Bomber and also potted one in the shoot out.

In the other three games against Yorkton, Weyburn and Estevan Flin Flon was out scored 19-2. I felt bad for the Bomber goal tenders Simon Hofley and Casey Parker who didn't receive a lot of help in front of them.

Once again had the Bombers been able to capitalize on even a quater of their chances, the scores in all these games would of been quite differant. In all the years I have covered this team and the SJHL, I have never seen a team so snake bitten.

The Bombers have ten games remaining this year and are still alive in the playoff picture, but are losing ground fast. Flin Flon trails Laronge by three points, with both teams playing 46 games. Notre Dame has been able to build a six point gap on Flin Flon and do have a game in hand.

The Bombers will be in Laronge this Saturday and this is definately a must win for Flin Flon. These two teams will meet three times before the season concludes March the fourth.

If the Bombers can win those games and get some help from other teams that will be playing Notre Dame, the playoffs could be possible. Notre Dame has a tough schedule with games remaining against Yorkton, Melville, Kindersley and Battleford, so things could get interesting.

Next home game for Flin Flon is this Friday when Melfort comes to town. No broadcast of this game, but we will have the Bomber- Ice Wolf game from Laronge on Saturday. We will be on the air with the Murray GM Coach's Show at 7:10.

The Bomber record stands at: 17-27-0-2 36 points. Flin Flon is 5-6 against teams in the Sherwood Division and are 1-9 in their last ten.
