Busy Trade Deadline

The SJHL trade deadline came to a close last night at 10 PM local time and Head Coach and GM Mike Reagan was busy as usual up until then.

Sitting first in the Sherwood Division, Reagan was looking to add depth and character to the existing roster, building for a long playoff run, and he thinks he did just that.

The club added sought after veteran forward Teal Sobkowicz (Outlook, SK) from the Estevan Bruins and 18 year old forward Daylan Marchi (Lethbridge, AB) from the Canmore Eagles of the AJHL.

“Teal brings leadership and championship experience which is a very valuable asset to us,” commented Reagan.

Sobkowicz was a member of the back to back Champion Melfort Mustangs where the 6’1, 180 pounder totaled 44 points (21g, 23a) in 107 games.  He was acquired by the Melville Millionaires at the beginning of the season as futures in the Kirk Bear/Carter Hansen trade last season and in 17 games had 11 points (7g, 4a).

After being acquired earlier in the week from Melville, the Bombers were able to get Sobkowicz and a 2017 3rd pick from the Bruins for 1999 born prospect Matthew Lenz (Calgary, AB) and a 2017 1st rounder.

Along with his two SJHL Championships, Sobkowicz was a member of the 2014 Telus Cup winning Prince Albert Mintos.

“He’s won league titles, a Telus Cup, he’s a winner and there is something to be said about character,” added Reagan.  “From day one of this season, he’s a guy that we targeted.”

In their second trade of the day, the Bombers shipped 1996 born Dondre Watson (Calgary, AB) and a Player Development Fee to the Eagles in exchange for 1998 born Marchi (Lethbridge, AB).

“I watched Daylan at the AJHL Showcase this season and really liked the way he played,” said Reagan.  “We did our homework on him and heard nothing but great things about him as a player and a person.”

In his second season with Canmore, Marchi had 10 points (6g, 4a) in 31 games after an 8 point (2g, 6a) in 44 game rookie campaign.

“We value character real high and that what this deadline was about,” added Reagan.  “Getting kids that can play and have great character is what building a championship team is all about.”

The team also sent 1999 born Brett Pickler (Villa Park, CA) to the Fort Francis Lakers of the SIJHL for future considerations.

“Entering the deadline we had three things on our list, we got two of them,” said Reagan.  “Adding Teal and Daylan was big, and the third was out of our control in Hein,” commenting on 1998 born prospect Brandson Hein (Winnipeg, MB) who stuck around with the Everett Silvertips of the WHL.

“We feel good about what we got accomplished.”
