Bombers Ready For Stars

 

 

 

Fresh off a 4-0 win Tuesday against Nipawin, the Flin Flon Bombers will host the top team in the SJHL, the Battleford Stars in a pair of games this weekend.

 

Battleford comes to town with a record of : 18-5-0-2, good for 38 points, 5 more than the Melfort Mustangs for first overall. They are also unbeaten in their last 5.

 

 

The Bombers are playing better and are: 5-3-0-2 in their last ten. 8-10-0-4 overall and trail the red hot Laronge Ice Wolves by 6 points for third in the Sherwood. Flin Flon does have 2 games in hand.

 

Battleford scores a ton of goals and enter this weekend with 103 in 25 games and are by far the most explosive team in this league. They are the only team in the SJHL with more than 100 goals for so far this year,  and have scored 23 goals more than the second best offensive club Melfort.

 

The Stars have 4 players in the top 7 in league scoring,  Layne Young with 35 points, Igor Leonenko 31 points, Jake McMillen with 29 and Dustin Gorgi with 28.

 

They are also good defensively only giving up 66 goals, which has them ranked fourth overall.

 

Flin Flon comes into the weekend with only 67 goals scored, which has them 11th out of 12 in  goals for. Only Melville has scored less. Their goals against is very strong though  giving up 71 in 22 games which has them sitting 5th overall.

 

The trio of Switzer, Kocur and Smith continue to be the top  offensive producers for the Bombers and were instrumental in the win over Nipawin on Tuesday. They combined for 6 points in the 4-0 victory.

 

Smith and Kocur are both in the top 20 in league scoring. Smith has 25 points in 22 games and Kocur has 23 points in 21 games. Switzer would be in the top 20, but missed 4 games due to injury but seems to be back on track.

 

Mike Reagan feels confident that they will start to see some secondary  scoring with the recent additions of Jason Lavallee and Pierre-Luc Morin.

 

Tonight will be the second meeting of the season with the Bombers taking the first game 8-4 back on October the 3rd. Brenden Newton was in goal picking up his first career SJHL win that night.

 

No broadcast tonight, but we will have tomorrow's game with the usual Murray GM Coach's Show at 7:15 and play by play at 7:30.
