Bombers Struggles Continue

The Flin Flon Bombers once again let a lead slip away on Saturday night. The struggling Mellville Millionaires came into the Whitney Forum and like they did the previous week in their own building, were able to defeat the Bombers.

Things started off on the wrong foot for the maroon and white as they gave up a seemingly harmless Cole Filler shot for the first goal of the game in the opening two minutes. The Bombers were able to shake off the early mistake and showed a lot of speed. Brandon Lesko tied things up at 1 a piece at 7:45 of the 1st period.

The Bombers offensive onslaught continued in the second period where Flin Flon got the benefit of some puck luck as Melville netminder Brandon Wells was way out of his net , when a  funny bounce landed on the stick of Josh Hayward who scored an uncontested goal, his first as a Bomber at 12:15.

Flin Flon was able to get a lot of traffic in front of the Melville net and take advantage of Wells' lack of rebound control to make it 3-1 thanks to Brandon Switzer's sixth goal of the year.

But as had happened many times this season the Bombers were unable to keep a lead. Back to back Flin Flon power plays resulted in back to back Melville shorthanded goals. Speedy Dylan Ostertag made it a one goal game after scoring on a breakaway at 8:24. Melville tied it when they were just trying to clear the puck and it bounced off the glass onto the waiting stick of former Bomber Dalton Menke who scored the equalizer with 3:46 to play.

Overtime solved nothing. Mitch Foyle scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Bombers a tough 4-3 defeat. That puts the Bombers at 3-7-0-3 and at the bottom of the Sherwood Division.

They will start their first four games in five night road trip of the year starting Tuesday night in Humbolt. Before the game Head coach and GM Mike Reagan informed CFAR of a three way trade that sends Joel Webb to Sherwood Park of the AJHL. In return the Bombers have acquired 19 year old forward Jason Lavalee from the Penticton Vees of the BCHL.
