Bombers Hit Win Column

The Flin Flon Bombers not only hit the win column for the first time Saturday, but looked very impressive doing it.

Flin Flon hit the score sheet 8 times en route to an 8-4 win over the top team in the league, the Battleford North Stars.

Battleford came to town with a 6-1 record and fresh off a 2-1 OT win in Nipawin the night before.

Despite giving up the first goal of the game, the Bombers were rewarded for their hard work and led 3-1 after 1.

Goals came from Switzer his team leading 4th, Kocur his second and Marzec his first.

The teams traded goals in the second with McMillen scoring for Battleford and Smith replying for Flin Flon, to give the Bombers a 4-2 lead after 2.

The Stars made it interesting in the third when Buziak scored a short handed goal to make it 4-3 early in the frame. The Bombers responded with Reitmeier connecting on a nice pass from Knaub to restore the two goal lead.

Battleford would draw within one for the final time when veteran Igor Leonenko scored at the 8:41 mark. The Bombers didn't panic and were determined not to let this one slip away by scoring 3 unanswered to take it 8-4.

Third period markers came from Lesko, ST.Onge and Switzer potted his second of the night and 5th of the year.

Some nice stories from this game with 4 Bombers picking up their first goal of the season including Lesko, Reitmeier, Marzek and St.Onge.

Flin Flon also started 18 year old Brenden Newton in goal and he stopped 39 out of 43 shots for his first junior hockey victory. Mike Reagan hinted that he might try someone else in goal after going with Zac Robidoux the first 4 games.

Defenseman Joseph Leonidas made his debut and was impressive with the way he rushed the puck and jumped right into the play. You could tell he has junior experiance and didn't seem out of place at all for his first game of the season.

Leonidas has played with both Whitecourt and Drayton Valley of the AJHL and has also played some games in the US. Reagan was very happy with how he fit in and looks like a nice replacement for Webb, who is back in Alberta awaiting a trade.

The Bomber record stands at: 1-3-0-1and are fourth in the Sherwood Division 2 points behind Laronge with 2 games in hand.

The SJHL Showcase is underway in Warmen and the Bombers will suit up against Weyburn later today at 5:30 and Notre Dame tomorrow at 3.

Next broadcast on 102.9 CFAR is this Friday against Kindersley and former team mate Austin Calladine. We hit the air at 7:15 with the Murray GM Coach's Show and play by play at 7:30.

Should be a great atmosphere with it being parents weekend.
