Broncos Mount Comeback To Take Down Bombers

For the first time in the Mike Reagan era, the Flin Flon Bombers are 0-3-1 to start a season after dropping a 4-3 decision to the Humboldt Broncos at the Whitney Forum on Friday.

The Bombers felt pretty confident going into the game that they would be able to pick up their first w of the season after holding the high flying Melfort Mustangs to only 2 goals on Wednesday.

It started well with the Bombers picking up the first goal, when Joel Kocur scored his first of the season to open things up at the 9:33 mark of the first period.

Flin Flon took a 1-0 lead into the second before Thompson would tie the game for the Broncos at 7:48. Once again the Bombers would take the lead when Roach would pick up a power play goal with a nice shot from the point that made it through lots of traffic to beat Brett Clark.

The Bombers were up 2-1 after 2, but for the third time this season let a third period slip away.

Former Ice Wolf  Connor Kortko would score his first and second of the season to put Humboldt up 3-2 with 13 minutes remaining in the third period.

The Maroon and white would tie it late, when Brandon Switzer batted a puck out of mid air for his team leading third of the season. The Bombers looked to gain the momentum back but took some late penaltys to squash that.

Unfortunately the Broncos swarmed the net in the dieing minutes and were able to jam a puck under Zac Robidoux and were able to hang on for the 4-3 win. Jace Pesch got credit for the winning goal.

Head Coach and General Manager Mike Reagan had this to say after the game.

" This has been the story of our year, something we addressed before the game. We sat out a guy because of dicipline and now we will have to sit out another guy for the same reason. I am not to happy with the way things ended up, I give Humboldt credit for working hard and they didn't stop. Unfortunately when you sit in the penalty box you don't win hockey games."

This is the fourth game in a row that the Bombers have out shot the opposition but have nothing to show for it. The final shots in this game were 41-20 in favour of Flin Flon.

It was announced after the game that veteran d man Joel Webb has requested a trade for personal reasons and wishes to be dealt back home.

Reagan and his coaching staff will have plenty of time to put this game behind them and move on, as they will not play again til this Saturday when Battleford comes to town. The Stars are playing very well and have the best record in the Finning Division at 4-1.

You would have to think if Reagan doesn't get the result he wants on Saturday, that some changes will be in order.

Game time is 7:30, with the broadcast on 102.9 CFAR, including the Murray GM Coach's Show at 7:15.

Congratulations to Bobby Clarke, Reggie Leach and the late Ray Martyniuk who were selected in the WHL'S top 150 players of all time. All 3 played together in the late 60's when the Bombers were one of the best teams on the planet, with Clarke and Martyniuk growing up and playing all their minor hockey in Flin Flon.
