Great Effort Leads To Victory

The battle of Northern Manitoba resumed last night at the GLMC with the Flin Flon Bombers getting the best of their Northern rivals from the MJHL 7-3.

A few things have changed in the 18 years I have been travelling to OCN  to watch these two teams do battle. For the first time that I can remember I didn't hear any boos from the crowd when the Bombers hit the ice. There has always been a great rivalry betwen these two teams dating back to the Norman League days, but it seems to have softened with the fans,  in my opinion any way.

To the game, I thought Flin Flon skated well and dictated the pace throughout the contest and had the upper hand in play. The Bombers dressed 5 vets while OCN dressed 7.

The Bomber vets all looked very good with Jason Cohan, Curtis Roach and Kristian ST.Onge catching my eye with a very good effort and were factors all night.

Flin Flon came out flying in the first period and scored 2 goals in the first  7 minutes, and quickly made it 3-0 early in the second, before the Blizzard settled down and got on the board midway through the second. The Bombers responded to get back their 3 goal lead and made it 4-1 after 2.

OCN was able to cut it to 4-3 with a couple of power play goals in the third before the Bombers would strike for 3 more to eventually take it 7-3.

Third string goalie from last year  Connor Slip started for the Bombers and played very well stopping all 17 shots fired in his direction. Connor continues to be very popular with his team mates and received plenty of high fives when he made his way to the bench to give way for Devin Debastos who stopped 10 out of  13 shots in relief.

OCN went with the tandem of Brandon Dillon and Patrick Casper who were far busier stopping 34 out of 41 shots.

Bomber goal scorers: Jason Cohan, Rylan Tkachuk (2), Adam Wilson(2), Brandon Lesko and Kristian ST.Onge.

Blizzard goal scorers: Matt Bullard, Bryce MacInnis and Brady Valiquette.

Power plays Flin Flon 3 for 9, OCN 2 for 9.

Mike Reagan will have some very tough choices to make with only 1 pre season game remaining and only so many spots available.

A couple other notables from last night recently acquired Adam Wilson from Bonnyville of the AJHL not only scored 2 goals but was very physical and looks like he will be a fan favorite. Isaac Tkachuk, Brandon Lesko and Cory Thomas are some of the rookies who really stood out.

The Bomber pre season record is 1-1, while the Blizzard are 0-1 with the rematch set for the Whitney Forum this Saturday at 7:30.

Make sure you get there as this will not only be the final time the Bombers play the Blizzard this year, but also the final pre season game with the regular season starting next weekend.
