Looking To Finish Strong

The Flin Flon Bombers were able to rebound after a tough outing against the Melfort Mustangs last Tuesday with back to back wins over the weekend.

The Bombers doubled up on Melville 4-2 Friday in what could very well be a first round playoff preview. After starting slow, the Bombers caught fire late in the first period and took it to the Mills the rest of the way.

It is always a bonus when your fourth line can supply most of the offense. Michael Knaub, Brett Kit and recently called up Nick Shumlanski all scored for the Bombers, with the other goal coming from Austin Calladine who potted his 17th on a break away.

Adam Beukeboom started his first game in 6 weeks and was very solid stopping 34 out of  the 36 shots he faced.

If this turns out to be a first round playoff meeting, the Bombers showed Melville that they are capable of turning it up at any point  and don't need their top 2 lines to produce to win.

The Bombers moved on to the Farrel Agencies Arena in Yorkton Saturday for a date with the defending national champion Yorkton Terriers. Adam Beukeboom took over right where he left off the night before and was brilliant stopping all 38 Terrier shots for his 4th shutout of the season, as the Bombers eeked out a 1-0 win.

Alex Smith got the lone goal in the third period when he put a shot through the five hole of Carson Bogdon who also had a very strong outing, keeping the Bombers at bay for much of the night.

The tough thing for Flin Flon right now is they are not getting rewarded for playing well and can't get any ground on either Notre Dame or Nipawin who keep on winning.

The Hawks took both games on the weekend against Humboldt, and the Hounds crushed both Laronge and Estevan. Notre Dame has a 3 point lead on both the Bombers and Hawks, and all 3 teams have 3 games left on the schedule.

Notre Dame plays Humboldt at home Tuesday and will finish on the road in Battleford and Kindersley this weekend. Nipawin will play a home and home with Melfort on the weekend before coming to Flin Flon next Tuesday. The Bombers play Laronge in a home and home before closing out with the Hawks.

The Hounds are definately in the drivers seat going 8-1-0-1 in their last 10. Nipawin is 6-3-0-1 and Flin Flon is 6-4. It very well could come down to the last game of the year for the Bombers and Hawks to determine 5th. I love this time of year when every single game means something.

Mike Reagan pointed out on the CFAR Post Game Show from Melville Friday, that they are not as concerned where they finish and are more focussed on ending the season well and going into the playoffs with as much momentum as possible.

102.9 CFAR will close out our regular season broadcast schedule with both games against Laronge this weekend ,  including the final trip to the Mel Hegland Uniplex on Friday. Murray GM Coach's Show is at 6:45 and drop of the puck  is at 7.
