Mustangs 6 Bombers 2

The Flin Flon Bombers had their 9 game home winning streak come to an end in a big way dropping a 6-2 decision against the Melfort Mustangs Tuesday night.

Melfort jumped on the Bombers right off the hop, scoring twice in the opening period on goals by Frei and Fauchoux, to take a 2-0 lead after one.

Chris Rauckman scored his league leading 37th goal of the season, early in the second period to give the Bombers some life, but it didn't last long. Melfort would score 3 straight goals to open it up 5-1 late in the second period.

Brett Kit converted a nice pass from Austin Evans to get the Bombers within 3 at 5-2 after 2. Adam Fauchoux scored his second of the night and 22nd of the season to put the icing on the cake at 6-2, just 34 seconds into the third on a Bomber give- away.

You have to give the Mustangs credit, they came out and took it to the Bombers, winning all the battles for loose pucks and forchecked them hard by taking away a lot of open ice. Flin Flon's skilled players never had a chance to get on track, and couldn't find a lot of room.

Flin Flon did outshoot Melfort 31-28, but a lot of shots for the Bombers came from the outside. It was a tough start for Simon Hofley, who got pulled after giving up 4 goals on 13 shots. Fans got their first look at Adam Beukeboom in a long while, who returned to the net after a lengthy injury. Beukeboom stopped 13 of 15 Mustang shots.

The League's leading point getter, Travis Mayan added 2 assists to give him 75 points in 51 games, and should be a clear favorite for league MVP.

The night wasn't a total loss with  Battleford beating Notre Dame 3-2, to keep the Bombers 3 points behind Notre Dame for fourth with 5 games remaining in the season. Flin Flon stays tied with Nipawin for fifth overall, and used up their game in hand tonight.

Wouldn't it be something if it came down to the very last game of the season between the Bombers and Hawks, March the third at the Whitney Forum.

Flin Flon will turn their attention to Melville and a possible first round playoff matchup this Friday, as the Bombers hit the road for two. If the Bombers finish 6th and the Mills win the Viterra Division, these two teams would square off in the first round of the playoffs.

They have only met once before in the playoffs, in what is considered one of the best league finals ever in 1993. This would be a lot of fun for fans in both towns and I am sure would bring back a lot of memories.

You can hear all the action from Melville and Yorkton this weekend on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com starting both nights with the Murray GM Coach's Show at 7:15.
