Bombers Host Stangs

After splitting a home and home series with the Nipawin Hawks, the Flin Flon Bombers will host the Melfort Mustangs for the 8th and final time tonight.

Flin Flon continues to battle with Nipawin and Notre Dame for fourth overall, and their record stands at: 27-11-6-6 good for 66 points tied with Nipawin for fifth,  with a game in hand on the Hawks. Both teams are 3 points behind the Hounds who are on a real roll unbeaten in their last 7.

The Bombers looked real good early Friday night, when they scored 3 quick goals on the Hawks in the first 12 minutes, and looked like they might chase Joe O'Brien from the net, but the Hawks settled down and didn't allow any more goals. Nipawin got  a late power play goal in the first period, but couldn't get any closer and the Bombers won the game 3-1.

Nipawin responded in their own barn the next night and took it to the Bombers 5-2. Flin Flon got lots of chances, but had a tough time finishing and always seemed to be behind the 8 ball. Every time the Bombers would score, Nipawin responded right after to take away any momentum and rode O' Brien for the win.

Flin Flon has 6 games remaining, and 4 of those games are against Sherwood Division opponents including Melfort tonight. The Mustangs lead the season series winning 5 of the previous 7 games, with 4 of the meetings going to extra time. Flin Flon has won 2 of the last 3 matchups.

Melfort continues to battle for first place overall and have the leagues best record at: 35-7-3-5, 78 points and are 2 up on Kindersley with 2 games in hand. Melfort also has the leagues best road record at 15-5-2. The Mustangs clinched their second straight Sherwood Pennant with their convincing 6-0 win over Laronge on Saturday.

This will be a good a good test for the Bombers who have been impressive at home this year at: 18-3-3-1 and have not lost at home in 2015, reeling off 9 straight at the Whitney Forum.

Tonight's game will feature two of the league's premiere goal scorers in Chris Rauckman for the Bombers and Travis Mayan of the Mustangs. Rauckman leads the league in goals with 36, and sits third in total points with 57. Mayan leads the league with 73 points in 50 games and is second in goals with 34.

No broadcast tonight, but we will have both games from the road this weekend in Melville and Yorkton, Friday and Saturday. We hit the air both nights with the Murray GM Coach's Show at 7:15.
