Bombers Come Home With 4 Points

The Flin Flon Bombers got behind the eight ball early and dropped a 5-4 decision in Wilcox last night  to the Notre Dame Hounds.

Ian Williams and Brett Boehm held the hot hand for their respective clubs firing hat tricks last night. Boehm opened the scoring at 9:43 of the opening period before Williams tied it at 14:14. Notre Dame then took the lead late in the first period, when Jared Martain collected his 12th of the year at 17:43.

The Hounds would score 2 more quick goals in just over a minute to open up the second period which would spell the end of the night for Simon Hofley, who stopped 16 out of 20 shots to make way for Connor Slip.

The goal tending change seemed to spark the Bombers who came back to tie the game at 4 after 2 with Austn Calladine scoring his 13th of the year,  and Brett Boehm scoring not once but twice to convert his hat trick. He now has 8 goals since coming back from the NCAA.

It was a power play goal that would end up being the differance when Williams completed his hat trick just 4:26 into the third period. The Bombers could not get another puck past  Alexi Thibaudeau, who ended up stopping 29 out of 33 shots.

Huge win for Notre Dame, who are now tied with Flin Flon for 5th overall with 60 points and both teams have played 45 games. The Bombers remain 1 point behind Nipawin for second in the Sherwood Division and will play the Hawks 3 more times this season.

The Bombers come home with a possible 4 points, which isn't that bad when you consider how tough it is to win in this league. Although they could of easilly come home with all 8 points, after squandering leads in both Nipawin and a 3 goal lead in Estevan earlier in the trip.

A tough road trip for Simon Hofley who was in goal for all 3 losses and I can't but help wonder if he has some confidence issues right now. Hofley has won a lot of big games in his career and let's hope he bounces back real soon to give the Bombers an option come playoff time. Mike Reagan said that Adam Beukeboom has been recovering slowly and if this were the playoffs he would likely be playing.

Congratulations to Connor Slip who picked up his second career SJHL win over Weyburn on Friday stopping 34 out of 37 shots. This had to be bitter sweet for Slip who lost in a shoot out in Weyburn earlier in the year.

Slip has been the third stringer all year, and has only started 3 games and has never complained and has played very well when called upon. I can see why Reagan and Slipp's team mates like him so much. He still has a lot of hockey ahead of him and it will be interesting to see where he fits in down the stretch and next season.

Flin Flon will enjoy a 3 day break before getting back on the ice for a pair of games this week at the Whitney Forum. The Battlefords are here Wednesday and Melville Friday. Don't forget Hudbay has picked up the tab for Friday's game, and everybody in Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach and the entire surrounding area will get into the game absolutely  free. You just have to show up.

102.9 CFAR will not be broadcasting these games, our next broadcast is Wednesday February the 11th in Laronge.
