Late Comeback Spoils Last Home Game Of 2014

The Flin Flon Bombers were just 6 minutes away from snapping a 3 game losing streak last night at the Whitney Forum.

Tyson Empey scored his third of the season, when he fired a shot over the right shoulder of Joe O'Brien last night at the 13:43 mark of the third period to put the Bombers up 2-1. The Hawks came right back off the faceoff 18 seconds later to tie it on Stefan Wood's second of the season.

The score held up til Garret Dunlop fired a re-bound past Adam Beukeboom with just over a minute remaining in OT. This one really stung as Flin Flon put together their best 2 periods of hockey so far in December. The Bombers outshot the Hawks 27-15 in the second and third periods and 45-31 overall.

Tyler Bell had the other Bomber goal, when he wired a slap shot past O'Brien on the powerplay early in the third period. Bell commented on the Bomber troubles of late. " We are still battling the same, when you get in slumps like this, every good team finds a way to come out of it and you just have to battle that extra harder. We played a good 60 minutes tonight and it won't be easy coming out of this slump, and we have to get a lot better in the little areas. I think we still have a lot to improve on especially on the powerplay."

The Bombers are now winless in 4 games and will close out 2014 on the road with 4 games in 5 nights starting next Tuesday in Laronge. The Ice Wolves are playing a lot better with back to back wins over Kindersley and Humboldt and are: 5-4-0-1 in their last 10.

Flin Flon will travel to Humboldt  Wednesday and finish up in the Battlefords on Friday and Saturday.

The Bomber record stands at: 15-6-5-3 and they sit third in the Sherwood Division, 2 points behind Nipawin . The Hawks have taken 3 out of the four meetings this season, with all their wins coming in extra time. Flin Flon has a record of: 5-3-3-2 within their division, with 3 of their wins coming  against Laronge.

Despite a tough December, Flin Flon still leads the league in goals for with 107. Their goals against is a concern with them giving up 85 in 29 games, which has them ranked 9th out of the 12 teams.

Hopefully the team can bond and put together a couple of victories on their last road trip, so they don't lose much more ground in the standings. I think as soon as they get their first win, they can get some much needed confidence and start to put the puck in the back of the net again.

We will not be broadcasting this road trip, but will be back with 13 broadcasts in the new year including our first broadcast of 2015 when the Bombers host Notre Dame on Saturday January the 10th.
