The Flin Flon Bombers spotted the Melfort Mustangs three first period goals before an inspired come back fell short last night at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort, losing 4 to 3 in OT.
The Mustangs pounced on the Bombers at the 10:24 mark of the first period and scored three goals in a 3 minute span to take a quick 3 to 0 lead.
Melfort captain Tyson Meyers opened up the scoring with his 6th of the season when he tapped in a loose puck on new Bomber goalie Kyle Jessiman. It looked like Jessiman had the puck covered, but Meyers beat him to the loose puck.
Kenzie Arnold and Colby Bredt then scored back to back goals to put the Bombers back on their heels.
Flin Flon looked a little shell shocked and I thought Head Coach and GM Mike Reagan might make a goalie change.
He stayed with Jessiman and Flin Flon got a late first period goal from Ryder Richmond to spark the team going into the locker room for the second period.
Trailing 3 to 1, the Bombers played their best period of the game and put two past veteran puck stopper Shawn Parkinson.
Billy Klymchuk set up Chase Haygarth on the break away and he got in alone to score his fourth of the year.
Klymchuk was at it again this time setting up Cole Rafuse from behind the Melfort net and Rafuse tied the game with a short handed goal and his 12th of the season.
I said it during last night's broadcast , that in my opinion Billy Klymchuk is the best penalty killer in the league and is one of the reasons why the Bombers have the best overall PK in the league.
With the game tied at 3, neither team could seel the deal in the third so over time was needed.
Flin Flon did get the puck deep in Melfort territory but couldn't get a chance in close on Parkinson.
Melfort took advantage of their best opportuinty, when Ryley Lanthier picked up a loose puck at the side of his own net and skated the entire length of the ice and fired a puck over Kyle Jessiman's shoulder to send the Palace into a frenzy.
What made this play interesting is Lanthier almost coughed up the puck in front of his own net before leading the rush down the ice.
It was the debut of new Bomber goalie Kyle Jessiman who brings lots of experience to the crease with 120 games under his belt in the QMJHL. He ended up with 30 saves on 34 shots and got better as the night went on.
He will need to get a few more games under his belt before I can truely assess his play. Parkinson was the busier goalie stopping 39 out of 42 Bomber shots.
Flin Flon does get a point and see their record fall to 12-4-3, 2 points behind Melfort for first in the Sherwood with a game in hand. Melfort improves to 13-4-2-1 and have only lost once in regulation since opening weekend.
Both teams will get the weekend off and next up for the Bombers will be the Yorkton Terriers who come to town for two games next weekend, November the 8th and 9th.
