Bombers And Stars Split

It was a battle between two premier hockey clubs this past weekend at the Civic Centre in the Battlefords between the Flin Flon Bombers and Battleford Stars.

Battleford came to play and took down Flin Flon 3-1 on Friday night, out shooting them 44-31 and 19-7 in the first period.

The Bombers looked like they had bus legs after the 7 hour trip,  but Head Coach and GM Mike Reagan said that was no excuse, and vowed his team would be better on Saturday.

They were,  coming away with a hard fought 5-4 victory. The high octave Bomber offense caught fire, scoring two goals in the opening period courtesy of Dawson McKenzie(5) and Isaac Jackson (3).

Flin Flon quickly made it 3-0 , to open the second on a powerplay goal from Vinny Nardone, his 13th of the season.

It looked like the Bombers were well on their way to blowing the doors open but the Stars had other ideas.

Gammer answered Nardone's goal 39 seconds later to get Battleford on the board at 3-1. Flin Flon restored the 3 goal lead when Calvon Boots potted his 6th of the year on the PP.

The North Stars never quit and fought back with two goals to close out the period from Form (1) and Urbanski (13) and trailed 4-3 after 2.

Any time Flin Flon needed a big goal they got one,  and Crystopher Collin made a great play to intercept a Battleford pass,  and fired a quick snap shot past Joel Grzybowski to put the Bombers back up by two at 5 to 3.

They would need it as the Stars did manage to get one more courtesy of Quintin Loon Stewardson to get it to 5-4.

Pierce Diamond was steller in both games and shut the door the rest of the way, stopping  43 out of 47 shots and was the Bomber's best player both nights. He has been in goal for 11 of the 15 Bomber wins this season.

Specialty teams were huge and were a big difference in this game with Flin Flon going 3 for  6 on the PP, while the Stars were 0 for 6.

This was an important two points as the Bombers were able to over take Nipawin for second spot in the Sherwood Division improving to 15-6-0-2, with 32 points. Battleford is a very respectable 14-8-1-3 and are currently second in the Global Ag Risk Solutions Division.

A big game tomorrow as the Nipawin Hawks make their return to the Whitney Forum trailing the Bombers by 1 point and leading the season series two games to none.

It is always an electric atmosphere when these two teams collide and this will be a very important two points.

Our next broadcast of Bomber hockey will be on November the 30th against the Estevan Bruins.
