Bombers 3 Hawks 2

It was a special Family day rare Monday night game at the Whitney Forum as the Flin Flon Bombers hosted the Nipawin Hawks in what turned out to be a very entertaining game.

Both teams were trying to shake off losses to the Melfort Mustangs over the weekend.

The Bombers started well and came out and hit everything in sight and were rewarded with the first goal of the game. Rob Johnson was able to re-direct a point shot past Jake Anthony to give Flin Flon an early 1-0 lead in the second.

The Hawks answered with a power play goal 5 minutes later when Casavant converted a feed from Arnold for his 14th of the year.

Ethan Daniels, who I think is one of the best penalty killers in the league broke in alone and fired a shot between Anthony's legs with under a minute remaining in the second period to put the Bombers up 2-1 after 2, on a beautiful short handed goal.

This was the turning point in the game and gave Flin Flon some much needed confidence coming out for the final period.

Nipawin is a very good team and you know they wern't just going to lie down and let Flin Flon coast for the victory.

Daven Smith stepped out of the penalty box and took a terrific feed from Arnold and busted in alone to beat Brenden Newton up high just underneath the bar to tie the game at two.

The Bombers shook that off and once again found the back of the net when Nate Hooper scored his 19th of the year to put the Maroon and White up 3-2 mid way through the third.

Brenden Newton did the rest and continues to give his team a chance to win every time he steps on the ice as he stopped 41 shots including a couple of dazzling saves in the final moments allowing the Bombers to hold on 3-2.

Final shots were 43-41 in favour of the Hawks. Both teams went 1 for 5 on the PP.

Good news for the Bombers as we near playoff time, Newton looks to be in playoff mode and relishes playing in the big games. He has been one of the best tenders in the second half of the season and looks as confident as I have seen him the past couple of seasons.

After going 30 games without a regulation loss, Nipawin has now dropped two in a row and are only two points up on Battleford for first overall. The Stars beat Weyburn yesterday.

The Bombers have moved to within 6 points of Kindersley for 8th and both teams have 8 games remaining in the regular season.

Flin Flon and Nipawin will meet two more times this week including a home and home on the weekend. Friday at the Whitney Forum and back at the Cage on Saturday. 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com will broadcast  Saturday's game.
