Back To The Finals

A 36 save performance from Brenden Newton led the Bombers to a 3-0 win last night at the Whitney Forum and a 4-3 series win over the Nipawin Hawks in what turned out to be a very entertaining SJHL Semi Final.

Newton was sensational once again between the pipes and only gave up 2 goals in 11 periods of work after taking over the crease in the second period of game 4. He has patiently been waiting for his opportunity and is seizing it.

It was a very loud energized crowd at the Whitney Forum, as Flin Flon played host to a game 7 for the first time since 1974 back when they were still in the Western Hockey league.

It only took 4:20 into the opening period before Nate Hooper capitalized on a Hawk turn over back of their net and flipped a puck over a helpless Kristian Stead to put the Bombers up 1-0 early.

Jason Lavallee would score a beautiful goal in the second when Brayden Lacoursiere fired a puck into the Nipawin zone and Lavallee jumped on the rebound to put a back hand into the top of the net to send the Whitney Forum into a frenzy.

Lavallee leads the team with 6 goals in the playoffs and I swear they have all been highlight reel goals.

Nipawin threw everything they could on net, but just  couldn't get a puck past Newton and Hooper would seal the deal with an empty netter with just over a minute to go.

This was a series for the ages as the Bombers were able to rally from a 3-1 deficit against a very good Nipawin Hawk team that have been on a tremendous run since January. Mike Reagan was confident all series long and knew his locker room had what it took to come back even with a 3-1 deficit.

15 players remain from their run last year and I remember talking to Lacoursiere and Zimmer specifically before game 6 in Nipawin and they made it quite clear they wern't done playing hockey yet.

This will be a very fitting Canalta Cup Final with the top two seeds facing each other, not to mention the rematch from last year's SJHL Semi-Final when the Bombers stunned the Stars in 5 games.

They haven't seen each other since December and the Stars did take 3 out of 4 from the Bombers in the regular season. Flin Flon did manage a win at the Civic Centre in Battleford where the Stars only lost 4 games all season.

I think this is a series a lot of people wanted to see and is even more interesting with the Bombers success against the Stars in the playoffs last year.

The entire community is rallying around this team and it is great to hear from former players, players parents and former and current Flonners all over the world. This run is bringing everyone together and 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com will be there every step of the way.

As soon as we get the schedule for the league final we will post here.

I would like to thank the Nipawin Hawks for a great series and congratulate Doug Johnson and their entire organization on an incredible run in the second half of the season and appreciate their co-operation very much.

I have been going to Nipawin for over 20 years and they have always treated me and the radio station very well and certainly appreciate their organization very much. First class all the way.
