Extremely cold weather did not keep drinking drivers off the road

The Manitoba RCMP’s holiday check stop program wrapped up News Years night.  They report despite the frigid temperatures and occasional blizzard like conditions the four week total for the program shows that just over ten thousand vehicles were checked during 357 check stops.  110 people were charged with impaired driving, driving over .08, refusal or impaired by a drug.  The RCMP also issued 46 alcohol related tiered administrative suspensions.  There were 27 other criminal code driving offences, 33 charges for failing to wear a seatbelt, 50 liquor control act charges and 1042 other highway traffic act offences.  Five people were killed as a result of four fatal collisions during the period of the check stop program although none of the deaths resulted from impaired driving.
