There will be changes to your tax bill next year

At their meeting last night Flin Flon City Council approved on final reading a bylaw that will bring in a special services fee plan for fire and police services for next year.  A per parcel rate of $550.40 will be levied on all rateable property and removed from the general tax rolls to spread the cost of these services evenly among users in the community.

The bylaw had been the subject of a Municipal Board hearing in August where several residents spoke for and against the proposal.  Mayor George Fontaine had told the Board the city is losing population, has aging infrastructure as well as having a heavy debt load due to provincially mandated sewer and water treatment plants.  He said the plan will allow for a mill rate increase next year without adversely affecting only the top 30 percent of tax payers who already pay 50 percent of total taxes.

Based on what they heard the Board approved the proposal and Council passed the bylaw on final reading last night.  Although it is for next year only Council does have the option of applying to have it extended.
