This is Fire Prevention Week and Flin Flon Fire Chief Jim Petrie explains this year’s theme is prevent kitchen fires.  He says kitchen fires are a leading cause of fires in the home.  He says often when they are called to a fire that started in the kitchen the residents tell them they only left the kitchen for a couple of minutes and that’s all it takes.  He advises stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling , boiling and if you have to leave the room turn everything off because it happens so fast and it moves so quickly within a couple of minutes your whole house can be involved in smoke or flames.

Petrie reminds families to develop and practice a family escape plan including agreeing on a place to meet outside once you escape the home.
