E-waste Collection is Expanding in Manitoba and is Working Well in Flin Flon.

The Manitoba government recently approved a new five year business plan for Recycle My Electronics which keeps many kinds of end of life electronics out of the landfill.  In Flin Flon the Recycling Center Administrator Deb Odegaard says it continues to be a successful program here.  She explains they collect the eligible products for e-waste recycling at the Recycling Center and they pack them up on pallets and when they have a trailer load they ship it out to Exnor E-Waste in Elie and the EPRA pays them for handling it so it’s working quite well for them.  She adds they are shipping about three loads every year around 30 tonnes which is pretty exciting.

Provincially the program diverted 3430 tonnes of e-waste from landfills. The renewed plan is expected to extend the program coverage to 95 percent of Manitoba’s population and provide better accessibility in northern and remote communities.  For information on electronics that can be recycled go to www.recyclemyelectronics.ca.
