Creighton Community School is recognizing Orange Shirt Day Monday. School Coordinator Carol Sutherland explains Orange Shirt Day grew out of Phyllis’s story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the mission and this is an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of Residential Schools happening annually. She explains they have various classroom project underway including sewing mini orange shirts as well as attachment hearts and to ensure that everyone is able to participate in Orange Shirt Day they will have mini orange shirts available for those who do not have one.
Sutherland adds the date was chosen for the time of year when children were taken from their homes to residential schools and is an opportunity to set anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the upcoming school year. As we reported yesterday students and staff in Flin Flon School Division will be wearing Orange tomorrow in recognition of Orange Shirt Day.
