Poetry Was Highlighted at Last Nights Flin Flon City Council Meeting.

The meeting opened with Council’s celebration of National Poetry Month with local poet Sheila Marchant reading three poems. This was in response to an annual challenge from Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi to have Councils across the country celebrate local poets this month.  As well on behalf of the Flin Flon Writers Guild, Toastmasters and the Library Harry Hobbs invited Council members to take part in their 14th annual poetry reading on April 10th at the Public Library.  He said this is a very well attended event with readers from all parts of the community and it is well known across the province.

In other business Mayor Cal Huntley reported he attended a cities meeting held by the Association of Manitoba Municipalities attended by representatives from nine cities.  He said they meet to discuss their concerns and it gives them a chance to lobby the provincial government.  He said one issue is they feel city operations should receive a rebate on their PST as they are a tax supported operation.  Huntley said this could be a significant amount if a city is conducting a major construction project.
